Three degree of freedom graphic object controller is a two motion detector unbounded and independent manipulable control device that converts the motion of an object to output signals on the display of a computer, and controls the translational motion to a third translational axis. Its patent number 5313230 was granted on 1994. [1]

Description

Three degree of freedom graphic object controller

  • Inventor: Daniel S. Venolia (Later Gina Danielle Venolia)
  • Inventor: Shinpei Ishikawa
  • Patent number: 5313230
  • Filing date: 24 July 1992
  • Issue date: 17 May 1994
  • Assigned to Apple Computer, Inc.

Context

This patent shows one of the first examples of a scroll wheel on a mouse. It had been invented independently by multiple people, but it is probable that Venolia and Ishikawa had been first to do so. A earlier incarnation had been shown by Venolia at the ACM SIGCHI conference in 1989.[2]

Apple did however not sell a mouse with scrolling function until the Apple A1152 "Mighty Mouse" in 2005, which instead had a miniature ball.
