Zenith ZKB-2R ... "clean me up, Scotty!"

I bought this ZKB-2R a while back because it seemed like such a quality board. It's got some great heft to it since it has a metal switch plate, metal back plate, and a beefy case to boot.

Image

The previous owner had swapped out the original switches for some clicky Tai-Hao switches. I actually kind of dig these but I'm looking for something a bit more subtle so I removed those and put them in a rack mounted keyboard that had some really bad clones.

I was thinking of using SKCM cream switches that I removed from a broken NeXT keyboard (I will get this working eventually!). These cream switches are much more my speed.

The cream switches need a good cleaning first. I'm curious about what kind of experience people have had running Alps switches through their ultra-sonic cleaners. Specifically, I'm mostly wondering what type of cleaning solution did you use (if any)? I've used denture tablets a few times in the past but I've also heard that these may be too abrasive for the plastic in the switches. What are your experiences?

The caps are also decent but I'd like to upgrade to something a bit more interesting. I have some interesting Alps sets but probably not enough of one single set to cover the whole board (especially because of the non-standard bottom row). What are people's thoughts on mixing profiles? Is it sacrilege or can it be done gracefully?

Finally, I'll probably strip the plate and give it a new coat of paint to protect it. Is it necessary to apply primer first?

Thanks!

You don't need primer if you get metal paint or self priming paint. I just used Rustolium for my projects and seems to be just fine.

Oh hey - I did this! I can't recommend it more! Top tier tactile switches deserve a top tier chassis, and the ZKB-2 is certainly that. they are absolutely amazing in the board. I fully support your decision! I swapped out the stock caps for 163-73 caps as well. PBT feels great with tactile switches!

Thanks! I had some blue rustoleum brush on paint so I used that (can't use spray paint where I live). It's looking a bit goopy but I don't really mind.

I'll keep that in mind while I look for keys!

Some of the springs are gold so I'm presuming that one of the previous owners swapped them out but didn't do the entire board. I'd like to make sure it's uniform (or at least not random).

I have a ton of springs on hand. Would anything be particularly interesting or should I shoot it get it close to stock creams?

If I knew you were going to be brushing it on I would have recommended a foam brush. Out of curiosity have you happened to find which springs make green alps ever so lighter?

To make the paint more uniform, could you paint a second layer and then after it's dried lightly sand the plate down? This is an actual question, not a suggestion - because I have no idea if that would work, hahaha.

I've heard that suggested before (wet sanding).

Just tried this out and I gotta go with 55cN being slightly lighter than stock green springs. This doesn't match the approximations on SPRiT's site but it's just based on what I'm feeling as I test it.

How much WD-40 do you typically put on Alps switches? I only have one can.

The folks on Geekhack recommend you put a drop of Castrol10w30 in the switch hole. The good shit imported from the US of A, the Chinese 10w30 just doesn't feel the same.

Had to use a bit of elbow grease to seat the switches but at least I can be sure they're solidly in place.

P.S. I did end up getting LUBAR last night (lubed up beyond all recognition). But unfortunately my WD-40 was all out so I had to use this Teflon junk
