Hi, I have a PS2 - USB adapter (see in the attachment) I have recently brought them to use with my Cherry G80-11800 and it works perfectly. However, I also have IBM Model M, Model M SSK, and Model F AT- but I have heard about a myth that IBM keyboards are power hungry beast and using those with cheap PS-2/USB adapter will eventually destroy its controller while it should only be used with PS/2 port behind the motherboard.

Is this myth true?

I have used those cheapies many times with no problems.

The only thing I noticed is that simple connectors from a single female PS2 to a single male USB don’t seem to work with keyboards (but are OK for mice).

The two female PS2 to a single male USB (as in the picture in the original post) seem to work fine for me though.

Caveat: I haven’t tried it with an IBM yet.

They will work but i would get something better myself , lindy do one like the one above but its much better build that the cheap ones , and its not even that expensive.

If you want to be flash and know it will always work , get a blue cube.

I have one of those, from Logilink. I've used it with my Model M for a month or so, and it works fine.

I do also have a blue cube, but the 'split cable' adapters allow me to also attach my PS/2 mouse.

Okay, after using it for few days.. this USB - PS2 adapter started to not working well.
Sometimes on reboot, I have to unplug and plug in the USB again or else the keyboard wont work.

Also, in gaming session I cant hold the keys.. for eg. keep holding W for few seconds and it will stop registering so I need to re-press it again to get it to work. This problem doesnt occur when using PS2 directly.

Can anyone check if my adapter is Passive or Active?

Model Ms especially early ones are fairly notorious for misbehaving with most PS/2 to USB adapters. If you want one that works without any problems, get a blue cube.

Your adapter has a "glop top" so it's not possible to see the IC. Presumably active if there is in fact logic underneath that.

Its active but its a cheap as chips one with a crappy COB chip, i mean look at that crappy soldering !

I have used it for over a year with a SSK and a RS232 to PS2 converted CST ( both very high powered old devices) and it never skipped a beat , even on a mac that are know to have a shit USB implementation.
