Because I frequently switch keyboards, I prefer detachable keyboard cables. Many of my keyboards have mini-USB connectors, so I keep a mini-USB cable connected to my USB hub, which is now connected to my Hasu USB-USB converter.

For a long time, I have wanted to convert my RF87U keyboards to detachable cables. I finally did this, using one of the easiest possible methods -- the Pexon Realforce Mod Kit (similar to their Filco mod kit, but designed for the Realforce). This is a short braided cable that replaces the non-detachable Realforce stock cable. The result is a short dongle that terminates in a female USB-A connector. I inserted a USB-A to mini-USB adapter into the dongle so that I could connect the keyboard to my mini-USB cable.

This solution is not as elegant as a surface-mount connector, but it is much easier and completely reversible. The only tool required is a Phillips-head screwdriver for detaching and reattaching the cable ground wire.

Pexon also has replacement cables for Realforce keyboards and a new style mod kit that terminates in a 5-pin metal coupling instead of a USB-A connector. A variety of colors and patterns are available for the braided cables. Their web site also has videos showing how to install the mod kits.

The Pexon dongle solution requires only a few minutes, and it looks much better than I thought it would. The dongle exits the keyboard from the rear-center and is hidden behind the keyboard. The newer version ("New Style Mod Kit) is more versatile -- you can select color, double-sleeving options, connector options, and cable lengths from drop-down menus and specify other requirements in a text box. With the Style Mod Kit, you can select the first length of cable so that you could use the keyboard's routing channels.

For those looking for a method to install a case-mounted connector, there is a post on GH showing how to do this using a mini-USB breakout board. However, this requires some soldering and using a Dremel to enlarge the cable opening in the rear of the case.

The Pexon RF Mod Kit is a bit pricey at £17.00, but it was worth it to me, considering the time and effort saved over other methods for making the Realforce cable detachable.
