What provisional name should we give to the MX blue variants?

After finding them in a Bondwell laptop a few weeks ago I made a wiki post detailing what I know about the wiki/Cherry_MX_Dark_Blue so far. Well, after some thinking I was wondering if it would be good to give it a more specific name like Cherry MX Navy (since some people already call it that) or Cherry MX Indigo as it would prevent possible confusion with the regular blue Cherry MX.

I also have the wiki/Cherry_MX_Pale_Blue variant and I was wondering if we should keep that name or go with something else more specific like Cherry MX Sky. Let me know what you all think!

Edit: Pictures below for quick reference.

cyan comes to mind for one of the names

I think Sky sounds lovely for the pale blue variant and Indigo sounds quite fantastic for the dark blue variant.

Navy blue is what I tend to associate it with more, but then again, I had always thought of SKCM Green as "Neon Green" and we're seeming to go with Lime.

I like all these colorful names to be honest. Sky and Indigo are my votes!

Indigo is more purple, but I could see it work out still. Sky blue works

I can also see the pale blue as lavender too though as it has a light bluish purple hue. Sky is more simple to work with though.

Let's use the same approach here like we did with Alps SKCM Lime. Short, simple, distinctive single word for a name. I don't think we need to describe the color hue as perfectly as we can. "MX Sky" is pretty good, "MX Cyan" also. The slider looks a lot darker in the second pic BTW Blaise170!

Good point. Maybe I should make a poll... :) the first one is my pale blue and the second is the dark blue!

Poll added!

I did not mean the poll Blaise170, the poll is fine but we don't really need it.

Yeah I know but it's for fun at least.

Indigo has too many syllables. I would make a Borderlands 2 reference, but I don't know how many folks here game.

How about MX Sapphire?

Both Indigo and Sapphire are too fancy IMO, I do like Indigo though. Cyan is pretty good.

Then, for the sake of simplicity, MX Navy and MX Sky work for me.

Definitely Navy. The pale variant I don't really have an opinion about.

Seriously. Indigo? Sapphire? Are we trying to name Pokemon games from the last decade?

Studying the pictures a little more after someone pointed that out to me, the two switch types for the blues are the same. Variations on colour should not determine if a switch gets a new colour name unless there are two different switch types. These should both be blue.

That's a valid point. Are we sure these are actually unique variants? Disassembly required, methinks.

snuci is right, we are giving an MX blue switch with a different slider hue another name. If it's technically identical to other MX blues then it's MX blue.

This is true. Many of the Cherry variants are redundant. The reason Alps SKCM Lime was given that distinction is because it is distinct from SKCL Green. If there isn't a significant difference then I'm not sure if it should be renamed.

But I remember Blaise170 saying this MX blue switch feels different, is that right Blaise170? In that case it might not be exactly identical to the "regular" MX blue.

I kind of doubt that there is a difference, Cherry isn't exactly known for trying different things right? Could just be the vintage effect that Blaise170 observed, which varies from board to board. Hard to say for sure unless the switch components actually look different.

Agreed, I mean my MX blacks from 1985 feel nicer than later MX blacks also, Cherry did not have production variations like Alps Electric.

Yes. I disassembled the navy switch today, the click slider has lube on it, it is similar to MX White but has a softer click. The sky blue is even more strange, as it doesn't appear to have any lube but it is almost linear and silent (it also has a two piece click slider). So they are different, even though I don't know if they were part of Cherry's catalogue or if they were special orders.

Edit: By the way, I should mention that the springs are also different lengths...

In that case it can have it's own name. Good work Blaise170!

Are there any (old) product catalogs of Cherry switches that we know of? Like the old Alps one? Maybe they'd list these variants?

I guess that settles it.

Sky and Navy are nice :D

Xmit has one from 1993, but I don't know what switches are in it.

None of those pics look like the turquoise blue that I am used to?

Based on current votes I think I'll rename the wiki pages to MX Sky and MX Navy. Of course, I'll also take some pictures of them disassembled too.

Which? I'm not sure what you are referring to.
