Sharing International Kits

Heya,

Every time I convince myself to purchase one of these very expensive "International Kits" from a keycap group buy, I wonder if it's possible to split it with someone who's using a different locale. Couldn't find a thread that addresses this already but here's my idea.

I will post a few examples of international kits here and post a reply with these international kits and highlight the ISO-DE keycaps in the image. If anyone from another locale has the time to do the same for his locale that would be great. Comparing the images from different locales should help you find out which locales are complementary to yours allowing easier sharing of expensive international kits.

The two examples I would like to start with are Granite (no row difference, tertiary legends) and Nantucket Selectric (row profiled, primary + secondary legends only) https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=79282.0

Most (?) european layouts have the EUR sign at the 'E'.

I think I can live without that € tertiary legend if it saves me 50% off an international kit.
This also only affects keycaps with tertiary legends ... so most double-shots are unaffected.

I'm interested in row 3 (jkl) 1x |\ keycap from sets that have that for this layout : http://i.imgur.com/kFcffVG.png

Guess neither Granite or Selectric has it :(

In the Granite set there are four keycaps with a '€' legend, so either at least three of the six languages included in the set don't need the 'E' key with the '€' symbol, or we have at least on layout with multiple '€' symbols. I'm gonna assume the latter is not a common occurence.

In general the sharability might depend on the included languages, the locales of the sharing people and wether the set includes teriary legends or not. for example the 'E' key can't be a problem in the Nantucket Selectric kit, because it's part of the base set and the international set doesn't include tertiary legends. The '4' key next to the blue '1/2 §' key might be a problem, because you can see two variations of this in the granite set.

Finnish and swedish layout actually have 2 EUR legends, one at 'E' and one at '5' (not sure 'bout norwegian).

And yes, I'd be happy without them, can't even stand the extra legends on the DE layout (braces, brackets, EUR, mu and @) ;)

I've just looked it up. Norwegian has the 'E'/'€' key and that's it for '€' symbols. Spanish has just the '5'/'%'/'€' key and italian has both.

It seems the '4'/'$'/'€' is used on british and irish keyboards, not in any of the languages the Granite international set officialy supports. I can't find a mention of the other '4'/'€' key though.

Thanks for participating everyone, I was looking for some other kinds of contribution though. Please take the time and mark the special keys for your locale in the two provided example graphics. This will allow people not familair with your locale help identify whether the leftovers of his locale kit contain the keys required for 1-2 other locales.

I bet there's tons of people here who bought EU/International kit in group buys and have 80% of the keys laying around with no use at all.

You forgot the Ö in Granite.

I don't really get why you want people to help you now for GBs that are over ... Wouldn't it make more sense to do this when there's an actual GB with an actual international kit you're interested in?

Moreover, it's not as if layouts are some sort of secret ... it's not really a lot of work to look up the national layouts in Wikipedia or on keyboard photos (Google images) and find out for yourself, so you can specifically ask in the groupbuy thread if someone from countries A, B, C or D is interested in splitting a set. Your chances should be pretty good doing it that way.

The pictures are just good examples of International kits in group buys. One with tertiary legends and one with row profiles.

My idea was to put together a database of required keys from international kits for popular locales.
Instead of digging through the Wikipedia page of each layout, I thought someone from that locale could just mark the keys on one of the pictures.

This could help people share the international kits better. Find matching locales for the leftovers of your international kits or join up with the while the group buy is still running :)

And thanks for the remark, the Ö is really missing!
