Got the plates... a lot of work awaits
The robot-65
The poker compatible one is perfect

Oh yeah, that's looking good!

Isn't the wood in the robot-65 and the numpad pic?
Posted: 30 May 2014, 15:32
by matt3o
yes, numpad and bot-65 are wooden (raw/untreated). A lot of work to do to make it look cool

This is nice, because you can treat your wood how you want it to look and feel.

Oh yeah, that kind of wood too!
How have the joints turned out? I know there was some risk involved with this trial, did it all pay off?

Everything's perfect. I'll take a pictures later when the glue cured

... actually the inner wood inset could be 0.5mm wider for a perfect/tight fit, but it works anyway with a hell lot of glue.

The joys of prototyping! Are the Costar stab mounts perfectly placed this time?
I'm looking forward to a sound sample of typing on a wooden layer case. I've heard good and bad things about what it does for clicky switches in particular.

the costar stab are as per costar specs -0.7mm, but it is still a bit tight. Anyway now you really just need to sand the plastic bit.

I started working on the wood case and it's a real pleasure to handle such soft material! I really like how it is coming out but there's also a lot of hand work to do.

Sounding good for my next custom!

The aluminium looks a little rough but that might just be residue from the cutting.
The wood looks great. Is it solid, or is it plywood?
Posted: 30 May 2014, 18:05
by matt3o
plywood. the alu has residue coming from the protecting sticker (which is pretty strong and you need a darn good thinner to remove it)

I'll take better pictures when finished

Spettacolo

what are you going to use for wood treatment?

Loving the look of the acrylic and alu, would I be able to get that design on the numpad?
EDIT: Also, what's the plan for positioning the teensy in the numpad?

1) dye
2) pore filler
3) wood finishing varnish (I believe it is called spar finish or something like that)

yeah any case design can be adapted to any layout.
the controller should go upside down under the PCB.

ok the wood case mostly works, but wood is a bit irregular so you really need to put at least +1mm margin in the measurements. I believe I can make the prototypes right but there's a lot of carpenter work. I need to add some safe margin here and there.
The acrylic case instead is really nice, I'm not a huge fan of acrylic but that case looks really nice (if only it was polycarb...).
I'll post more pictures soon

Matt3o when you say the wood is irregular, do you mean the material has a lot of variance or how it was processed?
Posted: 31 May 2014, 14:54
by matt3o
yes, the material has some variance. the cut is of course perfect, but the material is not flat like alu or steel, so you can't really work on 0.2-0.4mm margins like I usually do but more like 1mm.

The acrylic case has no "sandwitch" plate?
