I've known guano is bird shit ever since I read the James Bond book Dr. No. In the book, Bond kills Dr. No by covering him in guano. I suppose the movie makers decided a huge explosion was more exciting than seeing the villain covered in steaming bird shit.

Douché. Guano is a popular word on nature shows over here (the BBC just loves to stick David Attenborough in a cave with half a million bats a few times each year) and yet we call the avian variety "bird shite" without fail. Well, "bird poo" on the Beeb before the watershed, I suppose.

For some reason, people here seem to be perfectly oblivious to gull guano (which is absolutely everywhere), pigeon guano (which is why all our statues have bright white mullets), bat guano, and the dog and even human equivalent. (Yes, we have hoboes, they're delightful.) Then whenever Edinburghers go abroad, they come back and complain about how filthy the rest of the world is.

Trust me, Naples is in good shape compared to this place. No matter the bollocks my local-living ex-Edinburgh guide was telling me when I was there.

I'd call it hypocrisy, but it seems to run deeper than that. They just literally never notice.
