The strong pincushion distortion detracts from your otherwise excellent photos. Can you please correct this? This is easy enough to do in Photoshop. If you prefer free software, I think ImageMagick can do this:

http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/lens/

This is not perfect, but better:

Code: Select all

$ convert iVfaZ5v.jpg -distort barrel "-0.01 0.04 0" keyboard_correct.jpg

Thanks for the tip :) I will try and fix it, I'm not a big photographer, I use my phone and found a place in my house where the light is good enough and the background is almost perfect to create a good contrast.

I'm no photographer, but to a layman like me, the first picture looks more accurate and "correct", while the distortion is visible now that you've mentioned it, at least the keys are well in a row.

On the second picture, while the case looks straight now, the keys look bloated, as if the picture had been taken with a fisheye lens. Also, the colors have suffered a little, and become more pale.

Just my two Euro-cents!

I don't have a clue about these things, If in the photo I can see the details and looks clear it's OK to me, I never pay attention to details. To be honest I'm very vehement when it comes to altered photos when it comes to keyboards, if it's just for for art it's OK, but if it's for presenting keycaps and keyboards I hate it. I've been fooled so many times by some "cool" photos and when I had the product in my hands I have realized that it doesn't look a bit like the real thing. In some cases it was pure crap ...
So when I take a photo and look at it, it's OK if it's close to what I see in real life :)

Fixing barrel distortions is trying to make the photos less altered and closer to real life.

Yes, only in the second pic, even as a layman I can tell the image has been altered, or I would have to suspect that a fisheye lens was used, which was not the case.
Honestly the first pic looks a lot closer to real life, and the colors were better before messing with the image...

I agree the second pic is a bit extreme, but the first image is still altered by distortions non the less.

I edited my post above to change the second coefficient from 0.05 to 0.04 and updated the photo accordingly.

DanielT, what camera, and specifically what lens, did you use to take these photos? Often time there are known correction factors for particular lenses. EXIF data on imgur seems to be partially stripped and doesn't reveal what you used to take these photos.

With the second picture, the effect is much improved. However, colors seem washed out.

Sorry but I have to
I use this (asked a colleague at work to take a photo of my "camera" ) :

I really have no experience at photography and it's one rabbit whole I don't want do dive in. If I can do it with my phone it's good enough for me. Last "real" camera I have owned was a Canon IXUS i zoom bought in 2005, I think I still have it, somewhere ...

I looked around and can't find distortion parameters for the iPhone 6 camera, sorry. The SKRWT app seems really popular for this:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/skrwt/id834248867

I don't have an iPhone so I can't try this easily.

Small update, because I have a 60% problem a new board in my collection  And I think I have a Dolch problem too, can't help it, some have classic beige I have Dolch.

One day I have to take a group photo.

And a small update, first time putting stickers on MX Switches :)

can you confirm the "placebo effect"? :P

Damn, I can feel it even from here!

@Distortion purists: reshoot the picture, or behold an awful mash in Photoshop. What fixes one skew adds another. Forget it and use your camera!

well, I don't know what to say yet. So far I like how they feel, I try to think that the whole effort wasn't for nothing :D It definitely takes out the wobble of the switch top, that is for sure.
And the Dolch caps are spot on :) just what I needed for this project. I have to admit that I have used the 2@,3#,4$ and '" on another board where I wanted a clean look without the side printed legends, and wanted to have 4 and not F4 :D

@Mu: I have only one camera, and that is the one on my iPhone :D And one thing is sure, I can't be bothered to play with Photoshop, I don't have it and don't have the time or drive to learn how to use it. I have to keep up with the stuff at work, that is enough software related stuff for me

I thought you already tried switch stickers before? You sent me a whole sheet of them (were burgundy) that I used for my first 60% build. I remember you saying that you didn't notice much of a difference, and FWIW I didn't either :D

Back then I did it only on a few switches and got bored to death doing it  This is the first time I do a full board, well it's a 60% but this is "full" for me. I don't know if I would do it again, don't think it's worth the effort.

everybody says stickers don't do shit, but @DanielT is not everybody. :P

If he can confirm there's a difference, I'll take a try!

I completely understand, I find them really fiddly to fit on each switch, it's a bit mind numbing. I have signed up for some polycarbonate film on the GB on GH, hopefully they are a bit easier to fit!

They can look good, I suppose that's a function :D

Small update, some new stuff other stuff gone. I have also a new board on the way, can't wait to get it. It is something special, at least for me :D
