I watched that whole video. I'd certainly be in line for one of those open phones. I don't quite know how it would work though without them starting their own cellular company. That's where a major part of the evil is (
especially in Canada) - ripoff out-of-control phone companies with crap service.
I refuse to get a mobile phone until I have control over my own device, my location & usage are not being spied on
and I have reasonably priced reliable service. (yeah, I know... it'll never happen)

I'll tell you something. I would pay more if the phone is really in my control

So would I.
My comment about pricing was about getting ripped off. You don't know about Canadian cellular companies - they're totally evil. There is collusion to keep the price absurdly high, they charge obscene "roaming charges" (whenever the phone connects with a US tower - and most Canadians live within 100km of the US border), they charge ridiculous "early cancellation fees" and every bill is higher than the last bill (with no explanation). For these obscene prices, we get absolutely crap service. Most call centres outsourced to India, so when you want customer service, you're talking to somebody in India. It's unbelievable.
(I don't have a mobile phone, but my wife does)
