Wasnt quite sure where to put this, soo will put it here (we could do with a general tech talk sub forum)
anyway does anyone still use CRTs? was thinking of getting one as my main monitor, their price to performance ratio is unparalleled still as long as you dont mind the looks and size

current main monitor is a Dell U2711 2560x1440 27" IPS
got 2x Dell 2007fps 1600x1200 IPS on the way to replace my 1050x1680 tn P2210s

been looking at the sony GDM FW900

check out these badboys below.
thing is its really hard to find stuff on this small island and importing is a fortune for something this heavy

Have an Iiyama 22" in the loft, can't bare to give it away. It'll be used eventually. Was top of the line only a few years back... surprising how quick flat panels caught on. Economy of scale I guess.

You already have a 27" IPS and another two IPS panels on the way (and therefore have another two TN-panels left for other usage) and thinking about swapping back to CRTs?

I'm happy I don't have to use CRTs anymore!

im up too 2 IPS panels now...seller shipped the wrong fucking monitor, how hard is it tot tell the difference between 16:10 and 4:3 seriously....

but yeah CRTs offer better resolution, Better PPi, decent colour reproduction, better response times, better refresh rates that my 27'' u2711

was only going to use a crt as my main monitor.

Dirge - you should set it up with a secondary rig!

So, would more people like a tech talk subforum (not much use if there are only a few topics), or would Offtopic be sufficient?

I would appreciate a general tech forum, it could be given a trial run.
If there is no or little interest just shut it down, im happy to take up any administrative or setting up work needed on it if need be.

nothing to lose on it really, might get the forums more active, its been quiet as of late.

sheilmolson wrote:Well the monitors are looking nice. Now a days Dell products are more preferred than any other product. So there is no doubt in the Dell products. Only one thing I want to suggest you that before or after purchasing any monitor always purchase monitor arms with that to keep the monitor safely, save extra space and to increase the productivity.
wall mount monitor arm
any advice on where to pick up a cheap triple monitor bracket?

I used a 24" Elsa 24H96 CRT for several years until it finally broke down 2 months ago. I ended up switching to a Dell UH2412 instead of finding a new CRT due to needing the desk space.

When I finish the loft boarding and insulating I'm putting a dirty desk up there with the monitor and a G83. For when I want to solder or do anything messy and still have web access.

I worry that moisture will have killed it already mind... lofts are horrible places.

Though I can understand that some people prefer CRTs, I'm happy I switched to flat screens. Every CRT I owned made a really annoying high frequency tone, which gave me a headache after an hour. Same thing with TVs. I don't own and can't afford any expensive or high quality LCDs, but I still prefer them over CRTs.

The thing with old CRTs is that it is easier to void the warranties and put some glue on the coils which removes the noise. I would not want to open a brand new Dell 3012 to fix the coil whine.

I had the opportunity to get a fw900 in a nearby city a while back but I felt that my IKEA desk wouldn't be able to handle it, and neither would my tiny apartment.

My dad has got 3 of those LaCie Electron 22blue screens although he has only got room on his desk for 2
They are really good, but 1600x1200 really is max of what is comfortable to use. I have been persuading him to buy a flatscreen since watching any pictures on the web is damn near impossible (they are calibrated so they match the color output on the printer)
