So how was your 2012 in keyboards?
Things began with my computer and Logitech Wave keyboard getting stolen from my house, but that led on the winding journey to a computer keyboard obsession. Flush with cash from my renter's insurance payout, I moved beyond simple wireless and cheap "ergonomic" keyboards to the Kinesis Freestyle for Mac. I entered a completely new world of computer keyboards.
Not satisfied just having an ergonomic keyboard at home, I purchased a used split Goldtouch to use at work.
After making a few hundred bucks with my first stock trades, I decided to reward myself with a Kinesis Advantage. After a few days of typing on the Advantage, I realized that I could never go to flat, rubber-dome keyboards. I was hooked.
In a fit of excitement after spotting a rare used Maltron on Ebay, I snagged the Maltron while I could. With a Maltron and Kinesis in hand, I would return the one I didn't like. A few months on, I still have both.
With two of the most ergonomic mechanical keyboards on the planet, I sold off the Kinesis Freestyle and Goldtouch.
Not satisfied with only linear switches, I decided to purchase a small, tactile mechanical keyboard for my desk at work. Enter the Noppoo Choc Mini with Cherry MX Blue switches. It would be a nice placeholder until the Ergodox became available (hopefully).
With a PC-only Maltron sitting around and not much use for it, I decided to sell that thing. Until I started poking around the Deskthority workshop a little too much. Inspired by other keyboard projects, I embarked on a switch change project to bring tactile switches to the Maltron. Currently in progress.
Then the 2012 Deskthority Awards came around. I voted for things simply because I liked voting for things, and I was randomly selected to win a Filco Majestouch 2 with Cherry MX Red switches. Sure, I'll take it. I heard about glories of Filcos, I didn't comprehend their quality until I picked up the keyboard yesterday. With a Filco in my life now, things that once seemed nice are no better than the dirt on the soles of my shoes. Now I have a growing pile of keyboards.
During all this, I discovered Deskthority and spent many hours poking around the Deskthority boards. When I looked back on my life in a few years, the second half of 2012 always will be remembered as the time I got obsessed with computer keyboards, for better or worse.
