Questions about IBM Model M

Hey guys, new member here.
I am really new to mechanical keyboards, i came across this forum searching for information about the keyboards so i decided to make a thread to ask you some stuff.
I recently bought a IBM Model M (Model number 1391401) from ebay. It arrived a few days ago and some of the key caps are really weird.

First the ESC button has a huge RESET written below the ESC, the Alt keys are grey color but the engravings are green. Last but not least it's the F9 button, the F9 by itself is really misplaced (making it really funny when you look at it besides the other keys :D ) and it has a F21 written on the side. Is this something common with the IBM models ? I came across some older posts where some people had green Alt keys and blue Ctrl keys and they said they were used by the air force. Anybody knows where this keyboard has been previously used ?

On to my next question. I opened the board up and cleaned the keys and the outer cases. What do you guys use to clean the insides of the board, between the keys. It's really dirty and dusty with mud like stuff everywhere.

Final question, how do you guys stabilize the circuit part of the keyboard ? Whenever i try to plug the cable in the keyboard the circuit get's always pushed in.

Thanks a lot guys, sorry for all the mistakes. As you can tell English is not my native language

1.It looks like they have mixed the keycaps with non-original ones.
2. Cotten buds (q-tips) and isopropyl alcohol.
3. It should be secrured my plastic peg type things and bolts. This is as best as I can remember, only have one arm at the moment so can't take one of mine apart to check.
Pics should help us answer question 1 and 3 better.

Man that sucks, i was hoping that this wasn't the case.

You are right, i can see them but unfortunately they are broken by the previous owner. It seems that he tried to glue the circuit with the case with some silicon glue.

Yeah, looks like all my previous thoughts where right. Use no more nails tape to hold the pcb down.

Thank you my friend, it seems that i am in the search of the key caps now :). I'm guessing it shouldn't be that hard to find some of them. I don't know what to do about the circuit, once i plug in the cable i can pull it slowly back out so it's not that bad, but as you can guess i would prefer if this wasn't the case.

A good place to get replacement keycaps is clickykeyboards.com. They salvage them from original model Ms that they refurbish.

If the controller circuit is damaged, I'd recommend that you replace it. Unicomp has an inventory of old parts. If you can send them the exact model number from the circuit board (there should be a sticker on it) they might be able to help. Submit a support ticket with exact details.

Thanks for the page they have the key caps available. I actually pm'd the seller of the keyboard on ebay. The pictures he had listed were with the original key caps, he later switched them. Check it out, the pictures with 1 is the original listed item, number 2 are the key caps i received.

If he doesn't have the key caps i'll send Ascaii a message. If he doesn't have any available i'll order them from clickykeyboards ;)

Hey Guys
Can i ask you something ? Did i just get ripped off ?
I opened the Model M to clean it and noticed something funny. The insides of the Model M where white instead of Black.

Image

I turned it over and there was a second birthdate sticker in the back of the steel plate. The number in the back of the interior steel plate is different from the one on the back of the case

Pictures of the birthdate sticker on the case

Did the seller swap the insides of a 1386085 with a case from a 1391401 model ? The really weird part is that the birthdate on the sticker and the metal plate is exactly the same (i'm not sure if this is visible with the crappy picture quality)

The white insides are more rare. How would you have been ripped off? You bought a Model M on ebay and you got a Model M.

I didnt realise that the white insides are rarer. I thought i was ripped off because there is a different case and a different inside keyboard. You would feel the same if that happened to you. Since i bought a 1391401 model that was what i was expecting to find.

Hmm...the Model M...I'd rather use my iPad. It's much easier to clean.
