For some reason they seem to corrode in some fashion that prevents them from registering actuation anymore once this is done.

I think they corroded through the underside of the gold plating because of the metal used. This is from a keyboard with what seems to be either acid or base corrosives spilled into the guts of it, then somehow through the process of galvanic corrosion destroyed a lot of circuitry and some switches.
