This morning I was browsing GH when I saw a guy asking how much a Wingnut would go for. I was furious because these are awards and not trinckets, DT Club members contribute each year in order to have these made and awarded to people who have done something special. Yet some want to make some money out of this.
The whole artisan cap thing has gone out of control, people pay insane prices for anything. Some people use all kind of escuses and auction these caps for huge ammounts of money (there were some exceptions when the cause was a worthy one).
I don't give a shit for other caps each can sell and buy at what price he thinks is right but with a Wingnut I say stop. As a DT Club member I feel robbed, the Club paid for these, you don't want it send it back.
This is the post https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=59 ... msg2198804 , the guy asking has a very old account, my guess is this a clone.... I'm sure that wingnut is already sold, he got his inbox full the instant he posted, I'm sure that was the whole purpose of asking. There are a lot of "great collectors" just waiting for something as rare.

Haha just for fun I'd love to (pretend) to offer them mine...and at the very last minute pull out with some Romanian swearing text wall that you would have to improvise DanielT! Seems those clackmasters are out of control but they will never have this...

It will burst at one point, kids have a low focus span, loose interest pretty fast.
And yes these should be numbered so we can track down the asshole and burn his artisan caps collection

I think the beauty of the wingnut is that it is an exclusive award. It'd be like some nobody buying a Medal of Honor or Academy Award. Even if you have all the money in the world to buy such a thing, you're just a poser in the end and there's no way you're going to be able to brag about having one either, which is a big reason people drop a lot of money on expensive artisan caps to begin with.

That's exactly the point 002, if someone bought it rather than win it it's embarrassing to show off. And if I saw that person show it off in real life I might have to channel some of that intense Aussie road rage you posted in our swearing thread.
Now that I think about it Chyros is the right man for that job.

I can understand that there would be certain situations where somebody might try sell one even though it's generally frowned upon. It's the people who would buy one that I don't understand. I would love one for myself but I'd never buy one because I didn't earn it.

Yes the work put in but also the votes. People voted and there is a winner and a prize. Anyone can buy something. Selling one is worse though.

Selling one if your reason is purely financial gain then yeah. Selling one if you are a bee's dick away from being homeless or affording a chemotherapy session for a loved one is another story.

As we've found out in the swearing thread: some people are just cunts.
Expensive artisan caps are such an utter load of bollocks. I spoke to someone recently who said there was a blind auction for some MagicMeatball Caps and that one sold for $600.
I can't phrase it better than OO2: like buying a Medal of Honor or Academy Award. So stupid.
DanielT, I love your posts on the GH thread. So true. Unfortunately speaking the truth is a bannable offence so I guess we'll be seeing you more on DT.

Yeah like I care
This is how I think and nothing will change that.
What that guy did is a typical cunt behavior, you post your shit in Clack Valuation, everybody will see it and you gey your customers, but nobody can blame you that you sold that gor that amount if money. We call this in Romania " a dick up your ass and your soul in heaven", can't have both, but some think they do...
I have seen a lot of blind auctions, now there is a Slack Channel for keyboards, people throw money like in Las Vegas, brobots, clacks go for 200+ at least it's mindblowing. There is a guy that in a couple of months reached a collection of over 40 caps, and almost all of them go for 100+ at least. It's pure greed.... and others look up to such people...

That's not different than rare Cherry keyboards, rare Korean keyboards, etc. Supply and demand.
As for the Wingnut, yes, this is completely outrageous. I don't even see why anyone would buy a Wingnut, since he wouldn't have any pride in using it.

What I find puzzling about this clack hype is that unlike a vintage keyboard these little pieces of plastic are not impossible to manufacture and reproduce?! What if someone gets 100 copies of the most hyped clack reproduced...and then throw them on ebay for cheap. If I ever win the lottery and are bored to death that's what I'll do. And then I'll spam GH with the auction links all day.

Yeah, then people go apeshit about counterfeits. Look at K3KC, for example, who did just that. If you so much as mention owning caps from him on GH, you're essentially completely ostracised.

Then the counterfeits need to be better. Flood the market. Are these "gems" actually hand made?

To be honest, I think k3kc's are pretty good clones. I'm fairly confident that he bought a CC skull and just made a mold, though. Authentic "artisan" caps are almost definitely molds too due to their consistency, but I can't say for sure.

"Everything is for sale if the price is right" is the mantra of capitalism, but selling a prize that you received as an honor is pretty heinous.

K3KC keycaps quality is much inferior to CC keycaps. Also, CC was one of the very first artisan maker ; people still have a bit of honesty and don't want to finance a copycat.
And yes, all keycaps are made from a mold. Now some keycaps that are double or triple shots can take days to be made!
Binge said that he need at least 48h to make a single hungrkey. He even documented the mold creation here: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=78551.0
I can definitely see myself paying big bucks for that kind of work:

Not everyone has to like it. But I'll play the devil's advocate and say that even if you don't like those caps, you have to understand that there are people behind this, that spend a ridiculous amount of time creating and crafting their stuff. It's their own mean of expression.
On top of that, you have to understand supply and demand... A lot of people like artisan keycaps, so a lot of people want a nice artisan (or more) to match on their keyboard. But there's a really small amount of good artisans out there, like... not even ten I'd say. ClickClack is one of them.
And producing keycaps taking a lot of time, so they don't sell much. On they other side, there are thousands of persons interested in mechanical keyboards (Reddit community has 111,220 suscribers right now).
So yeah, I'm totally in for bashing on someone selling/buying a Wingnut, but please, don't extend to the whole artisan scene/market.

Personally, even though I am not really "in the game" myself, I think that gloyZ (I posted a link in the marketplace this morning) is producing extraordinary work.
edit - oops! I am not as fast as seebart
ALSO - don't overlook that there are buckling spring, Alps, and Space Invaders options for sale, too!

The wingnut in question isn't counterfeit. I don't know where he got it, but he is not the kind of person to purchase a fake. He's also had it for years.. long before k3kc was a thing. I think the blame for this lies on whoever sold it in the first place; I can't really blame the guy for wanting to recoup some of the money he spent on it.
On the topic of all other artisans I'll say what I always say : Quit yer bitchin'! People are going to get lucky and buy for retail, people are going to profit, people are going to overpay. Nothing you can do about it.

Well, if you see a gold wingnut for sale, mine apparently got stolen when I closed the warehouse last year. All the stuff from my desk went in one box, and it is not there.

I made a $50 offer to the guy in order to get the wingnut back to DT.
I rather doubt he will accept, but perhaps some DT members would find it fun to join my efforts.
In case of success, I also think it should then go to elecplus as a replacement
