My quest for the perfect whisky continues. I feel like the right whisky for me, if such thing exists, is something more intense than the Talisker and less intense than the Laphroaig. One thing is for sure: these light whiskies aren't for me.

I like scotch (Irish whiskey is a diluted mess... No offense Irelanders), but prefer bourbon. The bourbon trail in Kentucky is a walk to Mecca (pre-kids). Hit up during Derby week, and wow....
I prefer everything neat as well, but there are a few outliers that really perk up with aroma after a cube. I used to love beer, but hate the bloat (if I was in Germany though, I would be hitting up the monks for Trappist frequently). About the only thing I'll touch at this point are Imperial Stouts. Here is a glimpse of the cabinet (a friend requested a pic and had on the iPad), but the selection cycles frequently (half the bottles are currently different). The wife's shit is cropped out further right. I think there is dust on those if you follow.

I was talked into going to an estate sale that had LITERS of novelty decanters. I nearly shit myself when I realized they were still sealed (scored them all). I'm attempting to nurse them... But it's tough. Definitely atypical aroma and aftertaste.

Fancy making your own thread for the American stuff? I've been drinking whisky since I was teenager—Scot—but I know sweet bugger all about the stuff made overseas. We're naturally quite incredulous about it over here! Scots drink Russian vodka and Jamaican rum before they'll touch "Jack Daniels fancy brothers".

Sure... I think we saw all the Japenese fluff, and others started posting varieties... Just chimed in. And btw.. Jack Daniels (not bourbon), has some "dandy" cousins. I've had Deanston, Balblair, and several other Scotches already mentioned... But I adore Scotch... It's the grandfather of goodness. Everyone has a different interpretation of "mothers milk". I will let some other bourboner start a thread if that is desirable. I do still think we need a thread dedicated to "workshop break-time". That would be a fun one... keyboard parts all over fucking creation and a healthy neat pour in the middle of chaos.

Bourbon can be wonderful, my ancestors mostly came from Kentucky after receiving land grants for service in the Revolution.
That "peat" flavor is not necessarily the be-all and end-all - it can be tasty and exquisite but it is not a required component in a distilled spirit.
Personally, I perceive vodka as a cleaning chemical and rum as the proper "neutral" liquor for compiling sweet mixed cocktails.
PS - Jack Daniels is Tennessee Whiskey (disclaimer: I was born and raised in Tennessee) but that is junk - just as Irish Whiskey starts out like Scotch but gets filtered through charcoal, ruining it, so is Tennessee Whiskey basically bourbon filtered through charcoal, to the same effect.

We should start a new thread... But I agree... Calling old No.7 bourbon is the equivalent of calling Loch Dhu "Scotch". Both are like sucking on sweaty gym socks at best. Start up a thread if interested.
