Hey!
I would like to solder some USB cables, since I can not order nice ones here. I know the pin allocation, but how do I handle the metal shielding around the USB cable?
From what I heared you have to connect them to the usb male plug housing on both sides.

Just look for a pinout of the plugs and make sure you connect the same cables on each end. I've turned a few nice coiled ps/2 cables into USB cables using cheap chinese usb plugs. Works great and looks sweet with a bit of shrink tube on it

Yeah, simply repurpose the four inner wires, and connect the outer shield to the outside of the USB plug. Both USB and PS/2 cables are shielded, end to end. Simple and effective.
You can even do it beyond cables. Here's my Soarer's Converter Box, whose metal housing is hooked up to cable shields via its ports. That way the earth/shield runs all the way from my computer's socket to the keyboard itself.
