How IT ruined your life

Today's ordeal with Assmung (Samsung) inspired me to create a thread for all of our technology woes.I encourage you to share your suffering with poorly implemented IT. I don't need any particular advice with the situation at hand, I just need to rant about this little anomaly that's making my intestine incredibly irritable.

For some peculiar reason today, Samsung Kies decided to brick my phone during a routine firmware update.

"Due to an unexpected error"? Motherfucker. You bricked my phone, and you can't even give me a detailed explanation. An error code, something, anything. Listen here, you little shit. Of course errors are unexpected. I expect things to work most of the time. When I get an "unexpected error" I also expect to obtain a little more information about the said error other than it's fucking unexpected.

Check the error log, you say? The same arsehole who decided that errors are better left unexplained also determined that errors are better left unlogged. I wish more people adopted this nonchalant disposition just to see how far humanity would fare. "You have an unexpected disease. I can't tell you what it is because I probably don't know what it is myself. I base this on absolutely nothing, I can't share the test results with you, and I don't have any records of your treatment. But trust me, you do have an unexpected disease. Would you like try our emergency treatment service?"

"'Unexpected error'? The fuck does that even mean?"

ah Samsung Kies... how naive... I feel your pain, pal.

The other day I had to repair my father's PC. A windoze PC. I turned it on and it had to do some updates. 15 minutes later it was done. Reboot (forced). And he had other updates. Wait another 15 minutes. Reboot (again). I finally logged in and fixed PC problem in 2 minutes. Total time needed 32 minutes because of that fucking useless operating system. Gosh!

FWIW, I'm pretty sure you can still get the phone into emergency flash mode by holding a key combination on bootup. What phone is it, out of interest?

Kies is an awful piece of crap, but thankfully lots of Samsung phones are supported by 3rd party CyanogenMod projects. I had a Galaxy Europa a few years ago that Samsung never updated past a very buggy Android 2.2. I managed to get it on to a (somewhat) stable CM7, and while experimenting with it I bricked it a few times. I suppose there's nothing to stop you from trying now (unless there's a warranty and you can send it back to Samsung).

Within 32 minutes, you should have repaired his PC once for all times!

Oh man, I hate unexpected errors. If there's going to be an error, at least it should be an expected one.

"Unexpected error" with no details actually means the programmers were too fucking lazy to think of possible errors. Imagine Apollo 13 getting an "Unexpected error" with absolutely no information and Houston says, "An unexpected error occurred. Sorry, that's all the information we can give you. Houston out."
