16 colours? I released an icon set in the MagicWB style, which was only eight colours.
When I started with Linux, I made an 16×16 icon set for a DirOpus-clone for Linux called Gentoo (preceding the Linux distro with the same name). Even though this was in truecolour, there was a lot of hand-antialiasing to get it eligible at such a small scale. I actually used TVPaint under Windows - which had a user interface somewhat similar to DeluxePaint on the Amiga.
Yikes... this was all back in the '90s, but my old Gentooicons are still distributed with the latest bugfix-release of the file manager.
I suppose that you used an expansion card with a faster CPU in your Amiga 500 to have it running smooth with so many extensions..
