Yes that's correct (it was designed that way to accomodate both handedness)

The device itself seems to be a rebrand of a Labtec (later 3DConnexion) Spaceball 4000.

Believe it or not but the device existed even before labtec -- the original company (I forget the name) has been bought out like over 4 times. Because Logitec purchased labtec they also got the 3DConnexion ...

My unpopular opinion:
Caps lock is superior to the shift key for changing the cases of alphas.
#1 it's in a more ideal row than shift allowing easier access for my pinky
#2 I you don't have to 'hold down' caps lock like shift, you just toggle it

That is a model M, not a model F. The connector is for an IBM infoview terminal base. You won’t be able to convert it to a PC without a lot of logic....
