Re: Smart IBM PC/AT keyboard
That's quite an interesting layout, I actually wonder how having an extra backspace where Alt would traditionally go on a modern Keyboard would feel. As for the nav layer on your numpad, I couldn't recommend enough mimicking the traditional nav cluster over the layer.

Re: Adding USB ports to a Model M
I saw Andy J's thread just above this one about his Smart IBM PC AT Keyboard, you could even attempt something similar to a smaller extent if all you want are USB ports and you're handy with a soldering iron I suppose.

Re: Cut Model F Cable
I wonder if you couldn't attempt to reuse the rubber cable housing over a USB cable, of course that sounds like a lot more work than simply finding a working old black IBM cable and wiring a USB A end to it and soldering the end of the wire to a USB converter. Besides that, you could probably find ...

Re: Seeking the most efficient layouts
Glad to hear my favourite layout of them all has worked its magic on you.
As for Numpad keys: I have implemented those—albeit for a different purpose—on my own HHKB. Details over on the µHHKB thread. Is a staggered numpad, hidden behind the alphas, as good as a traditional, linear, dedicated ...
Re: IBM Model M Lifetime Discrepancy?
I would also argue that typing on a Model M would undoubtedly put more pressure onto the plastic rivets holding the board together, causing them to break earlier. I have a hunch *that* is partially the reason for the cap, if IBM reached a breaking point in their tests at any point and didn't decide ...

Re: Seeking the most efficient layouts
Alright, it's that time about now that I switch to the next layout. I'm thinking XT layout next, as that's my previous favorite layout. I'm worried because I've gotten so used to the HHKB... It's going to be sad to NOT use this thing. I'm going to be honest, I didn't think in just a week's time I'd ...

Re: Matias Ergo Pro w/ Salmon ALPS & PBT caps
Oh hey, I’ve done something similar with an omnikey that came with white alps. I’m curious about trying that with my quiet key… maybe I’ll have to learn how to solder.

Re: Seeking the most efficient layouts
I don’t even need a full sized backspace, just one slightly larger than 1u is preferred ala my Model F XT
Eh? The F/XT has a 1u backspace. Actually, all the keys on the F/XT are 1u, at least on the tops. Some are stepped from 1.25, 1.5, 2, and even 3u at the bottom, but you don't strike them ...

Re: Seeking the most efficient layouts
I’ve had to put up with 1u backspaces out of simply the fact that Ive got a lot of vintage keyboards to use which the cost for really strong switches tends to be odd layouts. I don’t even need a full sized backspace, just one slightly larger than 1u is preferred ala my Model F XT

Re: Seeking the most efficient layouts
The 1.5u backspace is much more usable I'd agree with that, although I do like my bigass enters I admit... I don't have a massive need for a specific enter key though. I know some people are ISO or Bigass enter diehards, and I can respect that, but at the same time I find it difficult to care all ...

Re: Seeking the most efficient layouts
I can definitely understand why, the HHKB layout has forced me into a few habits I've been grateful for in the past (had a hybrid for a bit, has a 1u backspace in the upper corner as per usual JIS) as it's partially why I vastly prefer having ctrl where capslock usually is. I hated having to go back ...

Re: Seeking the most efficient layouts
Are you taking into account the fact that different switch weightings or the switches themselves can affect typing speed?
I'm aware of this, it's why the typing test isn't the highlight. I've been favoring lighter switches for what it's worth, but yes this is true. I'll be pointing out where I ...

Re: Seeking the most efficient layouts
Starting the week strong with the HHKB layout! It's been a long while since I've last used an HHKB. So far so good, it has a good FN layer, even if the new backspace./delete trips me up. Will update later on in the week. For reference, my WPM coming straight from the regular ANSI layout is 115, with ...

Seeking the most efficient layouts
It’s pretty simple, on this thread I’m going to document how quickly I’m personally able to do day to day actions on different layouts. I’ll be timing things by the second as opposed to the millisecond, I’ll also use a WPM scale on things such as coding.
I’ve begun with a normal ansi, and next week ...

I wonder if there's a cap on how many times you can do this, there's got to be some system in place to prevent people from gaming the system. I've got loads of genuine junk just sitting around!

Re: Dear Model F owners, can we talk? (Long rant)
To a certain extent, yeah, we do all use layers. However, most games were designed with the standard ANSI or ISO layouts made standard by the Model M decades ago... that said, I WOULD like to get an HHKB again, typing this on my laptop and I miss having an easily portable keyboard...

I've noticed that there is some kind of age gap when it comes to keyboard enthusiasts. I once posted a picture of my dining room table on Reddit with a Matias Tactile Pro, a Model M, and 2 Apple AEK IIs on it, and got a lot of crap from people because all these keyboards were "full size boards ...

Re: Dear Model F owners, can we talk? (Long rant)
I feel like the biggest difference people report when they note some of the highest status keyboards is the light typing feel. I've been trying blue alps for the first time and the feel and sound are an improvement from white alps, but that's not really the main reason blue alps live up to the hype ...

Re: Apple Extended Keyboard II with Salmon Alps
My strategy when I got my m0115 with salmons is to wait until I found one sold as "broken" with a keycap broken off. It's a missing keycap, sure, but when they get stuck in the slider, that's pretty easy to slip out when you take it apart.
